In India, we call the puffed water lily seeds “makhanas”, which are very popular as a snack or religious fasting dish. Makhanas have been used in ancient Ayurveda in India for hundreds of years as they have many health benefits.
Puffed water lily seeds reduce cholesterol, aid in weight loss, have a low glycemic index, have anti-ageing properties, and are suitable for the kidneys.
This is a healthier version of the Indian chat or indianchat, a perfect breakfast or evening snack made with water lily seeds. I used Cheezy Vegan to give it a twist.
1 pack of Cheezy Vegan from Oh Lily
half-chopped medium-sized tomato
half cup of chopped cucumber
half cup of chopped onion
1 teaspoon rock salt
half a teaspoon of chilli powder
half a teaspoon of cumin powder
half a teaspoon of Indian chaat masala / jal jeera
1 teaspoon lime juice
a handful of chopped fresh coriander (optional)
1 teaspoon tamarind chutney (optional)
a handful of bhujia (crispy snack made from chickpea flour) (optional)
Mix all the ingredients together, then add the lime juice and mix everything well. Next, add the ingredients for the garnish.
Indian chaat is tangy, spicy, and has an abundance of flavours. It's the perfect snack for anyone looking for something unique. It makes your taste buds dance with joy.
